Discover the incredible beauty of the nearby Whirinaki Forest Park which has tracks for both tramping and mountain biking. For an adrenaline filled adventure try white water rafting or jet boating on the Rangitaiki river.

The centre of fishing and hunting country with pristine lakes filled with trout and Te Urewera ranges famous for pig and deer hunting.  Permits can be obtained from the local DOC office.

For activities further afield this peaceful retreat makes the perfect base to explore some of the North Island’s tourist hot spots. The coastal town of Whakatane is only 40 minutes away where a scenic flight or boat trip can be taken to the famous White Island. Alternatively, take the easy drive on the straight highway through scenic pine forest to the many fabulous tourist attractions in Rotorua – only 50 minutes away, or Taupo just over an hour away.

The Old Shearers Quarters also makes a good stopover point on the way to Lake Waikaremoana – about 2.5 hours away through stunning native bush.
